He has the extra flap of skin on his belly, which is also seen in feral cats in certain areas because maus got thrown into our mix of feral cats, and it is an attribute that nature likes so it becomes dominant in certain areas where this occurred. What I mean is that close to the skin the fur is cream colored, further up the shafts of fur is a darker stripe and then lighter tips ranging from dark grey to light faun or gray, depending on what his color is. It is what gives him his light and dark stripes and spots. Maus and some tabby cats have this where most other breeds don't. He is spotted and even full bred maus have some stripes that are unbroken. He has the dark stripe down the back and to his tail. To answer your question there are several throwbacks in your cat that tell of an ancestral mau somewhere in his lineage. Something that is commonly found here in America. Where you can find other tabby like cats the world over, you won't see that distinctive scarab or M in all of them. The Mau here in America is also known as the spotted tabby as well. While the domesticated tabby is a bit of a mutt, it is a mutt that was established and actually became popular. It is the reason why almost all tabby cats have that M on their forehead. So Egyptian Maus and their distinctive features slipped into our feral cat population. ![]() In true American style this was not always done responsibly. The reason the tabby is a predominantly bred cat, feral and not, is because there was a bit of a push to preserve the Egyptian Mau in the early 1900s. The one I have liked best has been the tabby.
